Another Excellent Book submitted by pk on July 14, 2014, 9:58pm This is another excellent book from Jhumpa Lahiri. The Lowland is about the lives of two brothers and how events in the Naxalite movement in India shaped them both. Lahiri has an amazing way of seeing the sadness, hopelessness, and truth in simple, everyday events. She follows the stories of the brothers and the people they touch beautifully. She also moves back and forth between parts of the stories so that more and more is revealed as the book progresses. Yes, this book is sad at times, but it also has some hopeful notes, which many of her works lack. She shows us an interesting window into the lives of Indian-American immigrants, and all those who struggle to fit in to a new place when family and tradition continue on in the old place. Give this or her other works a try. She's an amazing writer.

Beautiful submitted by michl8705 on July 26, 2018, 12:58pm I really enjoyed this, especially toward the end. I found myself a little bored in the beginning when the author delved pretty deep into communism in India, but it moved past that and got more into a study of the characters and their lives, which interested and touched me.

Excellent submitted by jaromatorio on July 24, 2020, 11:39am I’ve always been a big fan of Jhumpa Lahiri (if you haven’t read any of her short stories, you’re really missing out!) so I was thrilled to check out this, her second full-length novel.⁣

‘The Lowland’ opens in Calcutta, India in the 1960s, and the first half of the book follows two brothers, inseparable as children, as they mature to early adulthood and begin to grow apart. While one brother, Subhash, chooses to travel to America to pursue his studies, the other, Udayan, gets increasingly entrenched in the Naxalite movement-the radical wave of communism that swept through parts of India in the 1960s. When tragedy strikes the family, Subhash is forced to return to India to pick up the pieces, and does what he believes he must to heal his broken family.⁣

The second half of the novel follows Subhash, his wife, and their daughter as they build their lives in America after the tragedy. The family struggles to contend with the ghosts of their past, and though I can’t go into too much detail for fear of spoiling things, but you’re gonna feel feelings.⁣

This book is gorgeous. The characters are all flawed in a way that makes them feel so believable-you’ll find yourself crying with them, wanting to shake some sense into them, and celebrating their happiness as if they were old friends. And the way the author writes about relationships, familial trauma, the immigrant experience in America—it’s all just wonderful.

Compelling submitted by amcerickson on July 25, 2021, 9:28pm Sorry telling at its best. These characters feel so real.
