There was a lot that I didn't like about this movie but I don't want to overanalyze a Disney flick. Although, Disney tends to communicate complicated messages to children that stick with them throughout their lives, and in this way deserves strong critique.

I'm going to go ahead and say what I didn't like, because being curmudgeonly can be a little fun.

The writers used violence as a joke. Hitting someone in the head with a frying pan to knock them out four times in one day could kill a person. The rest of the movie did not rely on violence for comic relief and it was unnecessary to use it at all. In another scene a character falls from a tall height and the illustrators showed the body impact into the ground. That seemed over the top. I also didn't like the implication that long blonde hair has magical powers while brunette hair is powerless and lank. /end complaining

Fantastic! submitted by ErinDurrett on July 3, 2011, 1:39pm I agree with jaegerla, the chameleon was a great addition to this well developed film. I was a big fan of Rapunzel in this film, making lemonade out of the huge lemon of never being able to leave her tower. She read, painted, did chores, was a very hard-working girl. And another aspect of this film I found fascinating was the fact that she actually loved the old shrew that imprisoned her, because I always assumed from the fairytale versions that there was no love between Rapunzel and the old shrew. It was also clever of Disney to make her the long lost princess and the man who ends up finding her, a poor thief whom she falls in love with. I was also amused by the attitude of this young man, he was rather silly and arrogant and tried to charm the much too smart Rapunzel. This film was a lot of fun, from beginning to end, made more so with the addition of the chameleon and the imperial horse, who goes to great lengths to track down the thief. This is a film that will be enjoyed by all ages.

The characters were funny and you could connect with them right away. What I liked most about this movie was that there was a reason why Rapunzel's hair couldn't be cut. It wasn't for the convenience of Mother Gothel, it was to preserve the magic power in her hair. Overall a great movie, full of action, adventure and humor! And the songs weren't bad either.

Not Close to the original story, but enjoyable. submitted by brielle on July 19, 2012, 9:09pm For those of you fairy tale buffs and retelling lovers, this movie's plot is definitely a bit far from the original. But, the new elements are cuter and much more Disney magical. The colors, Rapunzel's demeanor, and Gothel's 1D character are all in sync. I would definitely recommend it. :)

Great Fun! submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2017, 3:39pm This is a worthy addition to Disney's recent run of excellent animated films and might be my favorite Disney princess movie made since Mulan. The story has enough roots in the classic Rapunzel fairy tale(s) to provide an anchor, but also shoots off in some unexpected directions. Flynn Rider is as charming as they come and Rapunzel herself isn't afraid to take action when necessary, reflecting a refreshingly modern view of who a princess can be and what she can do. The animation, songs, and voice acting are all superb, exactly as you'd expect from a major Disney production, and the movie holds up upon multiple viewings. This film accomplishes everything it sets out to do and does so in style- it's really that good.
