Rose and her parents have been going to Awago Beach since she was a little girl. It's her summer getaway, her refuge. Her friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had, completing her summer family. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and Rose and Windy have gotten tangled up in a tragedy-in-the-making in the small town of Awago Beach. It's a summer of secrets and heartache, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other.

Meditation on summer submitted by LibraryMaven on August 7, 2014, 12:24pm This graphic novel by the Tamaki sisters is a lovely, moving meditation on summer and growing up. Rose and her family have been going to Awago beach since she was five years old and nothing ever seems to change- the same cottage, the same summer sister Windy, the same traditions. But once you start becoming a teenager and then an adult, nothing stays quite the same, and Rose is faced with crushes, a summer of scary movies, and a mother who, inexplicably to her, seems wildly unhappy to be back at Awago. I loved the quiet drama of this graphic novel, and Jillian's illustrations in shades of purple perfectly complement Mariko's words. Read this and go back to your own memories of summer vacation and the ache of growing up.

So absorbing submitted by Lucy S on August 27, 2014, 7:14am I read this in one sitting I was so absorbed in this story about a young girl growing up. She is caught between the simplicity of childhood and the complexity of what she is learning about the adult world around her and her place in it. I loved it.

Coming of Age in Canada submitted by sdunav on June 27, 2016, 6:19pm While I loved the art and appreciated the story, with its multiple plotlines and ambiguity, my 14 y.o. daughter was frustrated by it and said it was only 3.5 stars for her. I wonder if this is one of those award-winning books for children (or in this case, teens) that is better appreciated by adults?

Beautiful submitted by jwpark on June 28, 2018, 8:05am I loved how there wasn't just one main story or one loud main problem but instead there were many different quieter ones that overlapped in the story. "This One Summer" completely captured the complexity of the weird in-between transition from childhood to becoming an adult and the illustrations only enhanced this beautiful story. I can't wait to read more books by this author.

Filled with Relatable Angst submitted by jucruz on July 13, 2019, 4:59pm A simple story that nevertheless illustrates how unfair and bleak things seem while being a teenager. I appreciated the kind of catty way that these two friends interacted with each other - their friendship isn’t perfect but who else’s company do they have to wile away the sloth of summer?

I also appreciated the glint of insight into the mother’s journey. Her child is clearly resentful but you learn only later why mom is so detached. A heartbreaking and heartwarming read.

A Delightful Read submitted by shubbard134 on July 23, 2022, 11:01am This story is a sweet depiction of the trials of growing into one’s own as a teenager. Sometimes comical, sometimes emotional, it was dynamic and interesting. The artwork slowed my pace of this book for the joy of exploring it.
