COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Relies on nostalgia of classic musicals submitted by ferielp on June 16, 2017, 1:45pm This movie breaks no new ground, but rather revisits the best parts of the history of the genre. The cinematography and direction was beautiful, but the script and performances weren't as spectacular as the awards campaign made them seem.

Highly Recommended! submitted by GJBarnett2 on June 17, 2017, 11:21pm Perhaps the best musical in decades! Should have won the Best Picture Oscar! And be sure to watch "The Young Girls of Rochefort," with Catherine Deneuve and her equally lovely sister, Francoise Dorleac, which clearly had great influence on La La Land.

Not as good as I'd hoped submitted by mmckenzie on June 25, 2017, 1:23pm ok, but the end felt rushed and I was disappointed.

Okay submitted by DL on June 26, 2017, 1:50pm Was expecting something better with all the awards it received.

Homage to Hollywood submitted by Meginator on July 16, 2017, 9:56pm I enjoyed this film. It is a nice homage to the classic Hollywood musicals and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. The plot is fairly typical for this type of film, even if it is a bit self-congratulating, but it has a few important wrinkles that are appropriate for the characters and their situations. The soundtrack is likewise excellent from a composition standpoint, although neither Stone nor Gosling provide exceptionally strong vocal performances; the composition makes up for it, I think, in most instances. La La Land may suffer from a bit of (understandable) overhype, but it is still a strong film in its own right and will hopefully prove that the large-scale Hollywood musical is not dead.

Entertaining! submitted by mcpapa on August 31, 2017, 9:52pm Fun and worthwhile movie to watch!

mixed reaction submitted by mandevil on September 20, 2017, 10:21am There was a lot to like in this movie, especially the great acting of the two lead characters. I didn't like the big production dance numbers which seemed unnecessary and distracting, but the smaller more intimate pair dancing was nice. The final sequence flashback montage was extraordinary and the best part of the film. Well worth wading through the rest.

amazing submitted by durableglass on July 6, 2018, 11:08am I love, love, love, love LOVE this movie. It is so well choreographed, and directed, and filmed, and the soundtrack is amazing. I love it so much

Musicals making a comeback? submitted by adj737 on July 7, 2018, 11:07pm Not my favorite, but I'd be happy if it started a trend for more new musicals on the big screen

ehh submitted by kbahleda on July 23, 2018, 9:07am I don't see what all of the hype is about. I found this hard to follow and had a harder time staying interested throughout

Spellbinding submitted by lstorc on August 27, 2018, 12:07pm This was an exceptionally well done masterpiece from lighting to singing to costumes... This was truly an enjoyable experience.

the criticism about jazz as saved by the white man is just submitted by lisa on June 27, 2019, 4:25pm But my it's a paean to Hollywood and the musical, and some of the sequences are amazing. Plus the bittersweet acceptance of loss--- that's somthin'. And the colors! Mmm.

Fun submitted by crp on August 9, 2019, 8:07pm Fun movie with ties to UofM

s submitted by kscapellie on July 11, 2020, 4:13pm cinematography was good

A Great Dollop of Optimism submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 24, 2020, 1:22pm What a revival of the old-school Hollywood musical. It stars two great actors that are great together. Ryan Gosling plays a jazz pianist; Emma Stone plays an aspiring actor. The dialogue is sharp and fresh. The romance makes you absolutely swoon.

Unexpected joy! submitted by amandasaurus on July 14, 2022, 11:43pm I did not expect to love this at all-if heard mixed reviews so I figured I’d give it a shot. A perfect blend of vintage cinematography with current events and styling. Emma stone is a little weak in my opinion, but it’s worth a watch nonetheless.

A beautiful love story submitted by vrevelli on August 29, 2022, 12:03am The colors and dancing are amazing in this love letter to LA!

Lovely submitted by Stinglikeawalrus on June 21, 2023, 1:21am I absolutely loved it. Gorgeous and well done, but also absolutely heartbreaking in a bittersweet way.
