Description

Geoff Grecynski served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the grasslands area of Mongolia from 2009-2011, where he taught English to children in the Mongolian countryside, as well as extra English classes for 10 promising underprivileged students. He conducted weekly games, music, and English sessions for children who often skipped school; ran a Community English Corner for teenagers and adults; and observed and provided feedback to Mongolian teachers.

Geoff lived in a yurt, but also traveled throughout Mongolia to meet with families who hosted Peace Corps trainees and volunteers and taught the Mongolian language to new volunteer groups. Geoff says, "Every day I was out the door at 7:30 a.m. and back only after dinnertime but, boy, was it exhilarating!" He followed his Peace Corps service with four years in China, where he taught English and improvisational theater.

For this discussion, Geoff leads a group of returned Peace Corps volunteers who will share their experiences of living and working for 27 months in their Peace Corps host countries.
The Peace Corps has been sending Americans of all ages to countries in the developing world since President John F. Kennedy created it in 1961 as his first executive order. Since then, over 220,000 Americans of all ages have served, bringing needed skills to countries that request them, as well as teaching people in their host countries about America and teaching Americans about host countries in the developing world.
