Description

The University of Michigan Museum of Art has a collection of more than 1,000 works of African art representing many of the diverse peoples and regions of the continent. UMMA’s holdings are particularly rich in the works created in Central Africa by a variety of peoples, states and historical kingdoms based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The collection includes metalwork (brass weights as well as articles of personal adornment), sculptures and masks, architectural elements, textiles, and ceramics.

Join Laura De Becker, UMMA’s Helmut and Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art, for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes exploration of this fabulous collection. Focusing on the sensory aspects of these works of art, De Becker will invite participants to experience the gallery in a new and exciting way. Participants will also have a chance to get up-close and personal with selected works that will be brought out from collections storage especially for this program in UMMA’s Object Study Room.
